Feature article

What is it you do again?” - Defining the Indefinable.

For the feature article this month I really felt strongly that I wanted to share a little of what might go on for you when you choose to come for a session with me.
No two people are the same, so it follows that no two sessions are the same. I couldn’t say emphatically to you that this will definitely happen or that that is what will happen, all I can do is give you a general idea of what may happen.

That is what I really love about this work and why I continue to choose to step in to the space I am so privileged to call my healing room and share a new journey with a fellow traveller. You just never know where it will take you.

When you sit across from me and begin to tell me what it is that has brought you to me, whether it’s a physical thing or whether it’s an emotional thing, I see it as an invitation. It’s an invitation for me to seek a path, with you, that will lead to your freedom. You are very much involved in your process and I positively encourage it. Even if you are with me for relaxation benefits you will be passively yet actively involved. The aim of my game and I offer myself as a channel for such, is that of empowerment through self knowledge which leads ultimately to liberation.

You set yourself free!

The primary focus of my work with you, is the body.
I will work with you to stimulate answers, a response, if you like, from your body.
I will touch, sense and feel. I remain open to what your body can show me that you aren’t even consciously aware of.
Where is there tension?
Perhaps there is physical tension that leads to holding in the muscles, stiffness and loss of movement and mobility.
But also there may be energetic tension which I recognise as an underlying feeling of unease.

Where am I being drawn to?
Where are you drawing me to?
“Show me” I ask “what do we need to know?”

Your body and you are leading me and showing me the way to where it is that you need the help, where it is that you need the touch, the awakening, the recognition and the reconciliation.

Whereabouts can I talk to your body and you about letting go, opening up, breathing and being free?

And so that’s what I do.

In a clear space in my mind, where I wait, listening and hearing, there is a constant dialogue between my Self and your Self, my hands and your body, my soul and your soul.
Perhaps when I touch a certain area of your body, something you may have mentioned earlier will float back in to that clear space in my mind and we will work together with it. Perhaps when I touch a certain area of your body you are flooded with memories of people and places and with thoughts of feelings long gone by. It may be time to consider letting them go and so seek a new way of feeling and find a new more empowering perspective.
Sometimes when a part of the body is touched, I notice a tremor, a release. It may be a subtle movement or it may be great shift but what it is, is very physical and it releases energy and it can release emotions. Often my hands will vibrate where there is an area in need of release. I know it because it gives me goose bumps as it clears and you may find you have connected with a spontaneous release of emotion that had been held there. It may even result in catharsis, the release of your tears, as you let go.
To me it’s as if the body has the ability to log everything that has ever occurred in your life. Every thought, every feeling whether expressed, repressed or depressed is all accessible via the body.
When the thought or feeling has been brought to the surface, it becomes a known quantity and together we can work with it. However that may happen depends on you but the results of knowing more and understanding more will leave you feeling clearer and lighter physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.

Alongside this dance with the body, I hold and interweave the wider knowledge of the chakras and I continue to ask how this relates uniquely, to you. There are times when I can just see, in my mind, how this is working for you and I just know it, but only if you can trust in me and what it is that works through me.

Sometimes it is important to consider what has happened in the past, particularly if you are allowing it to define your view of now. But this work is not to dwell in or on the past unless there are strengths to be found there that we have lost along the way and that is sometimes what happens.
Some of the work involves reconnecting to your childhood in a positive way. Not necessarily rooting out trauma and digging up pain.
The child within us is the aspect that holds your hopes and dreams. It speaks to you of your unique spark and that part of you in which the strength of your passions lie. It is that spark of in-defeat ability, that hasn’t been bent or trampled on or distorted or critised or even hidden away. There is work that allows you to re-connect with that pure essence of you in a Truly empowering way.

Through just some of this reconnecting work I personally have reclaimed my love of words and writing that got lost in my junior school. I called back my love of drawing and painting that was never acknowledged or nurtured during secondary school and I have finally to make time for my music which was also another story of loss through my secondary school. Sometimes the system is the destroyer of your spark and will continue to be so, if you continue to let it. I know!

Finally, I have learned this, to be an effective facilitator you have to give up being the facilitator, to be an effective therapist; you have to give up being the therapist, to be an effective anything you have to give up what that something is.
Yes, I do have a conscious wealth of knowledge and experience behind me that has been acquired over the last fifteen years or so. Yes, I have attended many courses, workshops, seminars that have allowed me to gather in to my repertoire many techniques. I also have my own personal experiences that actually reinforce and underpin the work that I do.
But please understand that ultimately I am “guided” to draw on any of the above in a session with you.
Firstly, I believe, (and know that each of us who are out there as healers and therapists may differ in our belief and understanding of what goes on) I am actually guided by you, the person who has found the courage to not just make an appointment but to actually make it to the session. There are some that don’t.
Secondly, I believe, I am guided by a force that is greater.
(The thing is they are actually one and the same anyway)

Personally yours

Christmas is coming!

“What?” I hear you cry “but it’s only May, what are you on about?”
Well, last Christmas my lovely friend and her lovely girls gave me the most inspiring gift I have ever received and this month you are at the receiving end of that inspiring legacy.
“Well?” I hear you cry “what was it?”
Well, it was a lovely hyacinth plant which had been potted by their own fair hands and some gorgeous short bread biscuits in the shapes of stars and Christmas trees which had also been made by those same fair hands (though washed I’m sure!)
The delicious biscuits didn’t last long, enjoyed with a cuppa or two and were all the more tasty for being Christmas shapes and over the following weeks I so enjoyed watching my hyacinth growing and wondering what colour the flower would be. With very little encouragement and regular watering it gradually revealed its glorious white flowers with equally glorious gorgeous scent. Hey no waste, no negative impact on the environment, no trudging round shops and huge pleasure in giving and equally as much in receiving.
It was at this point I decided I would totally think outside of the box for Christmas this year and be inspired to make my own pressies.

Since January I have been keeping any interestingly shaped jars that may be suitable for chutneys or cranberry sauce. I have sourced a couple of different recipes for cranberry sauce, noting when it needs to be made and how long it will keep in relation to timings for Christmas. I will look to buy the spices etc in September, well before Nigela and Jamie get in to gear, so there will be plenty available in the shops.
For the best roast potatoes cook with garlic and rosemary, fresh is fab but how about the gift of homemade garlic and rosemary oil to sprinkle over said spuds not just on the day but for a good few months after too. Mmmmmm! I hear you cry.
So the saving of appropriate bottles continues; garlic and rosemary is now growing in the herb patch in readiness.
I have kept any lovely ribbons and papers for decorating and wrapping to continue in this recycling, back to creativity mode (and am turning in to my mum, who had and still has a gigantic bag full of absolutely everything you could possibly need to wrap a present whatever the occasion, in the under stairs cupboard – I now have one!)
I have also had a good old rummage around the house for stuff that could make suitable gifts. Old candles and soaps can be merged and melted (not both together!) well, maybe not old soaps, but the ends of candles can be melted to make new ones.
Also a good rummage in material shops for off cuts and discount pieces can prove fruitful too. My thoughts here are to nab some of the lavender I have in a big pot in the garden, dry it out and make lovely lavender pomanders for hanging up or putting under the pillow.
As we continue to roll in to better weather and the gorgeous summer flowers I’m thinking of pressing some to make unique bookmarks that will be a reminder of sunnier days.
You know the list is endless, if you can take a little time and put in a little thought and perhaps be a little prepared ahead of December. I’m really looking forward to it and there’s something of the fun factor in it for me in finding out just how creative and resourceful I can be in these so called challenging times that is jolly reassuring I can tell you.
So come on guys, don’t wait to join the stampede at Crimbo, seize the day and get creative!

Ho! Ho! Ho!

Yoga yarns

Tales from the yoga mat and the Traditional Yoga Foundation Course.

Sunday 19th April 2009 - Day six

At the half way point of the course, this group of six travellers journeyed on and continued to be introduced to new ways to deepen the practise of yoga and deepen the connection with the self.
We looked at more of Patanjali’s teachings and to help with understanding what it is he is offering us through these teachings it is vital to understand more about what is behind the man, himself. We were also introduced to the five rings of tension that are located in relation to five different parts of the body. Each ring has its own unique associations and all rings have an effect on each other.
We continued with our exploration of breathing techniques by working with ratio breathing again and then moving to the powerful breathing technique of Nadi Shodhana Pranayama. We also used mantra as a point of focus for meditation.
We experienced a few moments on an inversion table, where the body is supported by the table and you are held at the ankles as you are gently tipped backwards. You end up, head down, with the body at an angle and feet up. This allows you to have a totally new body experience and is very powerful.
Postures – Preparation for and supported headstand.
What I uncovered – The bliss that is in that point where you totally have no idea of where you are. All ability to grasp spacial awareness is gone, liberating or what!
Quote of the day – “Let your eyes sink in to your skull, like ink, sinks, in to blotting paper.”

Myth – An imaginery person or thing.

The Myth of the Perfect Parent (P.P) and the Perfect Child (P.C)

The Perfect Parent (P.P) gets up at least an hour before the perfect child (P.C) wakes up. P.C. always sleeps the whole night through, is always dry overnight and is never thirsty therefore never needs a drink of water in the night.
P.P. showers and dresses with time to spare, then lays out a selection of delicious food for breakfast and plans the itinerary for the day. This will include plenty of stimulating and educational activities to delight P.C.
P.P will be fully present throughout all these activities never giving a thought to anything other than what is going on with P.C
P.P gently rouses P.C who always leaps out of bed with a smile on his face, ready to greet another day with the pure joy of living. Thrilled with choice of clothes P.P has laid out he puts them on by himself without a fuss as P.P patiently waits until he is ready, no matter how long it takes or how this may effect the itinerary for the day. P.C is equally as thrilled with the foods on offer for breakfast, quickly deciding what he would like to eat and doing so with gusto. P.P looks proudly on. Once finished he happily takes his plates to the sink and spontaneously goes to the bathroom to brush his teeth.
As the day progresses P.C contentedly plays, paints, draws, reads and does jigsaws and is completely absorbed in these activities with P.P.
If on an organised day trip, P.P has thought out and prepared a wholesome and nutritious lunch. P.C completely loves every minute out wherever P.P takes him and whatever they may do and willingly leaves when P.P says it is time to go. Dinner is equally lovingly prepared and consumed as the evening eases towards bath time. P.C plays happily in the bath, with a few toys and P.P in full attendance. All dry and in newly ironed pyjamas P.C chooses his favourite book which he never tires of hearing and settles down to sleep as soon as his head touches the pillow.
P.P, with unflagging energy proceeds to do the washing up, laundry, ironing, cleaning and any other chores until the small hours. When finally P.P goes to bed and also falls asleep immediately. P.P will awaken after only a few hours sleep, relaxed and refreshed and ready to do it all again.

I rest my case!

Energetic Antics

ways to channel energy and intention to enhance every day living.

Through distant healing and prayer.

  1. Send help, support and healing by taking a few moments to think about the situation or person, whether they are sitting next to you, or are miles away from you.

  2. Whether the situation is a big one or a small one you can send energy to help. You could send support for someone going through an interview for a job or to someone who is receiving treatment for cancer.

  3. If you have a photo of the person hold it between your hands, take a few deep breaths to relax yourself and in your mind ask for energy to go to that person.

  4. Hold the intention for that person by asking for the highest good for all.

  5. If you don’t have a photo visualise the person in your mind. See them as happy and healthy.

  6. Use colours to enhance your intention to help, pink is connected with unconditional love, gold is connected with protection but basically use whatever colour you feel drawn to.

  7. Light a candle a dedicate it to that person.

  8. Send healing to world situations and to world leaders.

  9. Take a few deep breaths to help you focus then visualise the part of the world you want to help, in your mind. Consider the climate, the people who live there and what the situation is.

  10. Hold the intention for peace ( if that is your intention) by sensing a deep feeling of peace within you and use the word ”peace” like a mantra repeating it over and over while holding the situation in your mind.

  11. Send healing to the earth.

  12. Sit with a feeling of gratitude for the earth that supports us.

  13. Visualise the earth in your minds eye. Hold the intention for the helping energy to go wherever it needs to go and help wherever it needs to help for the highest good of the earth.

  14. When you have finished sending distant healing to your person, people or planet take a few moments to be thankful for the opportunity to do so and enjoy knowing you have made a difference!
