The Nurturing Nature of Hot Stone Massage

The dark evenings are now upon us and with the gusting wind and lashing rain outside, all we really want to do is snuggle up indoors, nice and cosy and warm.
Aah the bliss of a real fire, with favourite slippers on and cup of cocoa in hand.
The soothing nature of the flames and their heat is so comforting and it brings with it a deep sense of nurturing to our body, mind and spirit that is much needed at this reflective time of year.

But for the majority of us, including myself, central heating sadly ensures no such fuel for the soul.

So as an alternative access to bliss why not venture in to the realms of a hot stone massage treatment and experience the hypnotising dance of heat, hands and stones?

The healing combination of heat and stones to assist the body and cleanse the soul is an ancient one.

Native American Indians used hot stones during sweat lodge ceremonies to assist with the cleansing process.
Japanese priests are known to have placed hot stones over their stomachs to inhibit digestion during fasting meditation.
Even the Romans renowned for their hot baths and spas enjoyed the benefits of lying on tables of hot and cold stones.
Nowadays hot stones are used by indigenous tribes not only to cook food but to keep them warm at night.

The stones that are used during a hot stone massage are smooth, volcanic basalt and they retain heat. The very nature of the stones is that of grounding. They are of the earth and come from the earth and their connection to you is to call you back to centre. The stones are placed beneath, on or around the body, they may be held in the hands and some are even placed in between the toes. By combining them with massage techniques, the warmth quickly induces the recipient in to a deeper state of physical and mental relaxation than with a traditional hands only massage.

Your first contact with the stones could find you lying on them as they are placed beneath you. You are encouraged to notice them and to notice the heat. A towel is usually placed between your body and the stones.
The level of heat is such that your reaction is a big sigh followed by an “Aaaaah” of bliss and not short, sharp gasps of “oh! oh! ah! ah!” -  You must never lie and fry!

The important process of nurturing the body is two way. You are invited not only to allow your body to let go and melt and merge in to the heat but to allow the heat to support and nurture you in return. As you begin to draw back in to your body, breathing more deeply as you do so, stones are also placed on top of your body to align with the chakras or energy centres. The gently stabilising weight on top of your body asks for your total surrender.

As the massage commences the heat from the stones is brought to you directly through the oils that are used, then via the therapists’ hands and finally by massaging your body with the stones. This process is repeated with each body part which is welcomed back to your whole body.

The benefits of a full body treatment are felt immediately. You will feel luxuriously pampered and deeply relaxed physically and mentally, but it is possible that experiencing the stones has a deeply profound and pro-longed effect as was the case with the following client.

This particular client felt that during the treatment they were supported in considering and letting go of the energy of two key relationships and nurtured to move forwards with much relief. The next day, during a walk along the sea front they felt drawn to choose two stones to symbolise the relationships and throw them in to the sea to really underpin the intention of letting them go. For this client the link between the hot stones and the stones cast into the sea was as such an important symbolic one.

In addition to this I would like to offer you some of the lovely comments people have made as they left the couch.

“It’s just like being wrapped up in a warm blanket.”

“I feel as if I’ve been hugged all over!”

“Through the stones I received all the touch I never had and all the touch I could ever need.”

“I can feel a warm outer glow but, there is also a warm inner glow too.”

Every person who chooses the stones has a truly unique experience and they do represent just what that person needed at that time.
So for a sense of the nurturing warmth of an inner and outer glow that compares to the fuelling flames of a real fire I welcome you to try this particular form of alternative bliss.

Love and light

Personally yours

At 40, Realisations not Resolutions!

This year “we” will be 40. That is the royal “we”, as in my husband and I.
I know he will not thank me for sharing this fact with you, so if you could keep it to yourself I’d appreciate it.
The thing is, he would like to keep it quiet but do you know what? I really want to celebrate how fabulous it feels to be forty with not only with a great sense of achievement about what has past but with a great sense of hope and excitement at all that is to come.
So to cement this intention I decided, instead of New Year resolutions I would opt for New Year realisations. Three in particular with perhaps a fourth if the Dalai Lama changes his schedule just for me!

Anyway, my first realisation is to experience a hot air balloon ride.
Now I know this isn’t all that spectacular but it is something I have wanted to do for ever. I am a romantic at heart and the thought of the peace and the silence of floating up high in to the sky with just the occasional sound of the flame firing us upward, would just be exquisite. Not to mention the incredible views and the very exposed connection to nature. Now I have come close to this dream in the past, I was actually booked on a ride, but the company collapsed, I hope the balloon didn’t! My hopes further remained unrealised on a once in a lifetime trip to Kenya where perhaps, I wandered, if a surprise trip over the Masai Mara might be in the off. But no such luck.

The second is a joint venture to truly take us (that is the royal us) out of our comfort zone and up a number of trees by climbing ladders and traversing zip wires on “Go Ape” in Moors Valley www.goape.co.uk  It might be more exciting than it sounds as my husband is not that good with heights and has this overwhelming urge to jump off. Luckily for us safety hats and harnesses are standard and you must clip your carabineer on at all times. (It’s the people below I’ll feel sorry for!)

And possibly finally, but I hope thirdly, is an either / or.
Either an eighties revival party, complete with eighties sounds, Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet and such like. With appropriate garb, stilletto’s, shoulders pads, big hair and big make up and a hog roast!
Or a little trip to see Depeche Mode in Europe.
Hmmmm tricky one! Your thoughts welcome.

So the ultimate realisation would be to see the Dalai Lama too.
I am kicking myself because a friend has text me the last two years running, to ask if I wanted to go and it just didn’t fit. This year it could really fit and it looks like he might not be coming to the UK and so that one is definitely out there. Watch this space. www.dalailama.com

There you have it. I look forward to sharing my escapades with you as they happen and reflecting on the near misses at the end of the year!

Is there something you have always wanted to do but never quite “realised” it?
What is it that is stopping you?
Why not join me in making this the year to realise your dreams by making them a reality?

It might take a little courage but the rewards will so be worth it.

LOL
